Background Information & Look n’ Feel

The HTC HD Mini is a nice looking compact phone which packs quite a punch. It weighs 110g and is 103 x 58 x 12 mm in size which is 30% lighter than its predecessor, the HTC HD2. “The demand for the HTC HD2 has exceeded our expectations, and the HTC HD mini fulfils a desire from some customers to bring the capabilities and experience of the HTC HD2 to a more compact design,” said Peter Chou, HTC’s chief executive officer.

Hardware – Display, Keyboard, Battery, Communications, Memory, Connectors

The display of the HTC HD Mini is a 3.2” TFT capacitive touchscreen with 65K colours and a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels. The HTC HD mini includes capacitive touch for viewing, zooming and resizing websites, Microsoft Office files, PDF documents and pictures with just a pinch of your fingers.  The phone also has an accelerometer sensor so you can auto-rotate the screen.

Multimedia options include FM radio, Windows Media Player, a 3.5 mm audio jack and a 5 megapixel  camera with autofocus.  The phone also comes with GPS (including digital compass), Assisted-GPS, and Wi-Fi.  Assisted GPS, ( A-GPS), is a system which can improve the start-up performance of a GPS satellite-based positioning system.

Software

The HTC HD Mini uses the Windows mobile 6.5.3 operating system in conjunction with numerous bolt-on’s from HTC. For example, the  HTC Peep enables you to tweet and follow your twitter stream.

The phone has a 600MHz Qualcomm 7227 processor which is nearly half the size of the HD2’s 1GHz processor. As the HD Mini has a far smaller display than the HD2 it does not require the same processing power. To power the phone a 1200 mAh battery provides up to 7 hours talk-time on 3G and 20 days standby time.

Availability & Pricing

In summary the HTC HD Mini cannot really be called progress on the HTC HD2. It is however a small triumph for creating an already successful mobile phone and miniaturising it into something more portable for the masses. The HTC HD Mini will be generally available to customers across major European and Asian markets at the beginning of April.
