Whether you go for a contact or not will depend on your personal circumstances. My wife has such an outdated phone but she’s perfectly happy with it because she only uses it for occasional calls and texting. As my wife can’t be bothered about monthly contacts and new phones she has a pay as you go phone (PAYG). I on the other hand have a monthly contract mobile phone because I like the latest smartphone in order to receive emails and access social media sites.
When choosing a phone think about what you need it for and this will dictate whether or not you choose a cheap monthly contact, pay as you go or SIM only.
